Description
Calycanthus 'Hartlage Wine', commonly known as Carolina Allspice, is a woody landscape shrub valued for its burgundy red flowers. It typically matures 3–6 feet tall and 3–6 feet wide. Grow it in full sun to partial shade in average, well-drained garden soil. Its native range or documented parentage is cultivated selection or hybrid of North American Calycanthus species and Asian Sinocalycanthus chinensis. Its flowers can provide seasonal forage for bees and other beneficial insects. In the landscape, it works well in specimen plantings, mixed borders, and foundation plantings. Good siting and appropriate moisture help maintain its best form through the season.
