Description
Ilex opaca 'Jersey Knight', commonly known as American Holly, is a woody landscape shrub valued for its male flowers during spring and summer. It typically matures 40–60 feet tall and 10–20 feet wide. Grow it in full sun to partial shade in moist, well-drained clay or loam soil. Its native range or documented parentage is Central & Eastern U.S.A. It provides nectar for pollinators. In the landscape, it works well in barrier, hedge, and screen/privacy. Once established, it shows useful tolerance to deer, salt, and storm damage.
Benefits
Adds long-term structure, shade, and a sense of permanence to the landscape. Supports a more active, living garden with flowers that pollinators can use. Offers native-plant character in a garden-friendly selected form. A better candidate for landscapes with deer pressure than more browse-prone plants.
