Xanthorhiza simplicissima

Xanthorhiza simplicissima, commonly known as Yellow Root, is a woody landscape shrub valued for its brown or copper and purple or lavender flowers during spring. It typically matures 2–3 feet tall and 6–10 feet wide. Grow it in partial shade in moist, well-drained loamy soil. Its native range or documented parentage is Eastern USA. It provides understory habitat and food for upland game birds, songbirds, and small animals feed on the fruit. In the landscape, it works well in small groups, naturalized area, and pond. Once established, it shows useful tolerance to deer.
