Description
Ophiopogon 'Nigrescens', commonly known as Black Mondo Grass, is a herbaceous perennial valued for its pale lavender to white flowers. It typically matures 1–3 feet tall and 1–3 feet wide. Grow it in partial shade to shade in average, well-drained garden soil. Its native range or documented parentage is cultivated selection derived from East Asian Ophiopogon species, especially those native to China, Japan, and Korea. Its flowers can provide seasonal forage for bees and other beneficial insects. In the landscape, it works well in mixed borders, mass plantings, and pollinator gardens. Good siting and appropriate moisture help maintain its best form through the season.
Benefits
Adds movement, texture, and late-season structure without a fussy flower display. A better candidate for landscapes with deer pressure than more browse-prone plants. Helps make lower-light garden areas feel intentional instead of bare.
