Aster macrophyllus

Aster macrophyllus, commonly known as Calico Aster, is a herbaceous perennial valued for its light purple flowers during fall and summer. It typically matures 2.5–4 feet tall and 2–4 feet wide. Grow it in partial to deep shade in moist, well-drained clay or loam soil. Its native range or documented parentage is North America. Flowers are attractive to butterflies. In the landscape, it works well in small groups, naturalized area, and walkways. It has a moderate growth rate and generally requires little routine maintenance.

Extends color and interest into the part of the season when many gardens start to fade. Supports a more active, living garden with flowers that pollinators can use. Fits naturally into Mid-Atlantic planting palettes and habitat-minded gardens.
