Vernonia noveboracensis

Vernonia noveboracensis, commonly known as New York Ironweed, is a herbaceous perennial valued for its purple flowers during fall and summer. It typically matures 5–8 feet tall and 3–4 feet wide. Grow it in full sun to partial shade in moist, well-drained clay or loam soil. Its native range or documented parentage is North America. Flowers are attractive to butterflies, bees and other pollinators. In the landscape, it works well in border, meadow, and naturalized area. Once established, it shows useful tolerance to deer and wet soil.

Extends color and interest into the part of the season when many gardens start to fade. Supports a more active, living garden with flowers that pollinators can use. Fits naturally into Mid-Atlantic planting palettes and habitat-minded gardens.
