Description
Cryptomeria japonica 'Black Dragon', commonly known as Japanese Cedar, is a woody evergreen conifer valued for its foliage, form, and structural presence. It typically matures 50–70 feet tall and 20–30 feet wide. Grow it in full sun to partial shade in average, well-drained clay or loam soil. Its native range or documented parentage is Central & South Japan and China. Its dense branching can provide shelter and nesting cover for birds. In the landscape, it works well in barrier, screen/privacy, and specimen. Once established, it shows useful tolerance to deer, diseases, and salt.
Benefits
Gives the garden year-round structure, texture, and winter presence. A better candidate for landscapes with deer pressure than more browse-prone plants.
