Sporobolus heterolepis

Sporobolus heterolepis, commonly known as Prairie Dropseed, is a clump-forming ornamental grass or sedge valued for its brown or copper and pink flowers during fall and summer. It typically matures 2–3 feet tall and 2–3 feet wide. Grow it in full sun to partial shade in average to occasionally dry, well-drained clay or loam soil. Its native range or documented parentage is Canada to U.S.A. Birds like sparrows and juncos feed on the seeds. In the landscape, it works well in accent, border, and mass planting. Once established, it shows useful tolerance to black walnut, deer, and drought.
