Chasmanthium latifolium

Chasmanthium latifolium is a clump-forming ornamental grass or sedge valued for its brown or copper, green, and purple or lavender flowers during fall and summer. It typically matures 2–5 feet tall and 1–2.5 feet wide. Grow it in partial shade in moist, well-drained clay or loam soil. Its native range or documented parentage is Mid-Atlantic and Piedmont region of eastern North America. This is a larval host plant for Northern Pearly-Eye (Lethe anthedon) caterpillars. In the landscape, it works well in accent, border, and mass planting. Once established, it shows useful tolerance to black walnut, deer, and drought.

Provides seasonal color and texture and may support pollinators or other garden wildlife.
