'The Rising Sun' was discovered in 2006 at Jackson Nursery in Belvidere, Tennessee by Ray and Cindy Jackson. A collected seed of unknown parentage had been planted in 2004 and was being grown in a row of other seedlings. Chosen for its heart-shaped foliage and gorgeous peach tones when young. Its leaves cascade into orange and then deep green hues as the leaves mature. Fall foliage is yellow and orange. Its abundant pea-like, rosy pink flowers appear in early spring before the foliage. Description
Cercis canadensis 'The Rising Sun', commonly known as Redbud, is a woody landscape shrub valued for its pink, purple or lavender, and red or burgundy flowers during spring. It typically matures 20–30 feet tall and 25–35 feet wide. Grow it in full sun to partial shade in moist, well-drained clay or loam soil. Its native range or documented parentage is Eastern and central North America, NC to E. Mexico. 12 species of Lepidoptera use this tree as a larval host plant. In the landscape, it works well in border, flowering tree, and small groups. Once established, it shows useful tolerance to black walnut, compaction, and deer.
