Description
Acer palmatum 'Sango Kaku', commonly known as Japanese Maple, Coral Bark Maple, is a woody landscape shrub valued for its gold or yellow, purple or lavender, and red or burgundy flowers during spring. It typically matures 15–25 feet tall and 10–25 feet wide. Grow it in full sun to partial shade in moist, well-drained garden soil. Its native range or documented parentage is Asia: Japan, China, Korea, eastern Mongolia, southeastern Russia. Members of the genus Acer support Imperial Moth (Eacles imperialis) larvae which have one brood per season and appear from April-October in the south. In the landscape, it works well in accent, specimen, and understory tree. Once established, it shows useful tolerance to deer and drought.
