Description
Viola walteri 'Silver Gem', commonly known as Labrador Violet, is a herbaceous perennial valued for its purple flowers during spring. It typically matures 1–6 inches tall and 1–12 inches wide. Grow it in partial to deep shade in moist, well-drained loamy soil. Its native range or documented parentage is Southeastern U.S.A. west to OH and TX. It supports Fritillary butterfly larvae. In the landscape, it works well in mass planting, naturalized area, and woodland. Once established, it shows useful tolerance to heavy shade and wet soil.
Benefits
Creates an early-season lift after winter with fresh color and growth. Brings more movement to the garden by drawing butterflies and other pollinators. A better candidate for landscapes with deer pressure than more browse-prone plants.
